In a recent study, published in Media Psychologythe researchers asked the users to examine this extensive training data, but most of the users did not see the bias – unless they were in the dominant group.

Chen, Sundar and co-author Enchae Jang, a mass communication student at Bellario College, created 12 types of Prototype AI software designed to detect facial expressions of users.

The first initial experiment included participants from a variety of ethnic groups with white participants making up the larger sample size. In each test, the researchers asked participants whether they perceived the AI ​​system to treat all racial groups equally. The researchers found that in these three conditions, most of the participants indicated that they did not see any choice. In the final test, black participants were more likely to identify racial discrimination, compared to their white counterparts and only more often when it involved negative images of black people.

“We were surprised that people failed to realize that they were disappointed with that race and with some emotion, that another race might have represented the feeling given in the training details – even if you looked them in the face,” said Sunder. “To me, that's the most important discovery of the course.”

Sundar added that the research was more about human psychology than technology. He said people tend to “trust ai to be neutral, even if it isn't.”
