In December, we shared our commitment to the White House's Genesis Mission — a national effort to integrate AI and double the pace of American scientific discovery within a decade. Since then, Google DeepMind (GDM) announced an early access program that provides AI with scientific tools to all 17 National Laboratories of the Department of Energy (DOE), and Google Public Sector shared how Gemini Government can serve as the AI core of DOE.
Today, at the DOE Genesis Mission Summit 2026, we're expanding this by making 40 million AI tokens and cloud credits available to researchers supporting the Genesis Mission.
Frontier AI tools for scientific discovery
Under this expanded commitment, we will first provide grantees of DOE's Genesis Mission with generous access to GDM's AI frontier science portfolio, including:
- AlphaEvolve – a coding and discovery agent powered by Gemini, for designing advanced algorithms.
- AlphaFold 3 – a model for predicting the structure and interaction of proteins with other biomolecules.
- AlphaGenome – a tool for understanding how variation in DNA, including the non-coding genome, shapes biology and disease.
- Weather Next – a modern family of AI weather forecasting models to map weather conditions.
- AlphaEarth Foundations – the basic AI model for mapping and understanding our planet in unprecedented detail.
Second, we will provide Gemini seats and government tokens for one year to tens of thousands of users across the DOE National Laboratories' operational, research, and management teams. This secure platform supports the full scope of work from the research bench to the management of special user facilities that serve the entire scientific community, providing a single secure foundation on which DOE's mission can depend.
AI for scientific instruments works throughout the laboratory environment
Although we still have a lot of work to do, the practical impact of the Genesis Mission is already alive throughout the laboratory environment.
At the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), senior scientist Dr. Henry Kvinge uses AlphaEvolve to reveal large mathematical systems that are too complex for humans to evaluate by hand. AI uncovers hidden connections automatically, quickly finding traces that might have taken researchers years to discover.
“Modern mathematics relies on abstraction, but combinatorics provides concrete models that make complex geometry and algebra easier to understand. We found that systems like AlphaEvolve are perfect for this research,” said Dr. I asked. “Using the extensive mathematical knowledge of LLMs, we can automatically evaluate experiments from countless angles. We are still trying, but what we have already discovered is shaping our future research.”
At the National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR), researchers are using Gemini to fundamentally change the way they interact with laboratory hardware. Dr. Steven R. Spurgeon, senior materials data scientist at NLR, leads the program at the forefront of independent material discovery.
“Our collaboration has allowed us to build an independent testing capability,” said Dr. Spurgeon. “By adding Gemini to our instruments, we cut the time to measure with a microscope from more than 90 minutes to about 13 minutes (eight times faster) and reduced the steps needed to focus an image from many to 50 to two. That's time and attention we put back into the science itself, allowing a truly independent workflow that can see in real time, the reason we can't test, and it helped design the space. they can reach only by manual labor.”
