AI mode in Google search and AI overview is getting a Gemini upgrade

People come to Search for incredibly broad queries — sometimes for quick information, like a sports score or the weather, when a simple result is all you need. But for complex questions or tasks where you need to explore a topic in depth, you should be able to tap into a powerful AI conversational experience.
Today we are introducing two improvements that bring us closer to this idea of Search: the ability to ask anything on your mind – no matter how long or complex – and find what you need. First, we're making Gemini 3 a new automated model for the global AI Overview, so you can get the best AI answer right on the search results page, for questions where it's useful. Second, we make the transition to chat even more seamless. Now, you can easily ask a follow-up question right in the AI Overview, and jump into the conversation back and forth with AI Mode. In our testing, we've found that people prefer an experience that flows naturally in a conversation — and that asking follow-up questions while keeping the context from the AI Overview makes Search more useful.
It's one thing with outstanding links that you should keep checking out: a quick picture if you need it, and an in-depth discussion if you want it. So the next time you have a question, find the nearest Google search bar, and just ask anything.
