The son of a teacher from Wisconsin, Todd Bol was in his fifties when he dreamed of the first free library, not expecting that tens of thousands of these small bodies in the love of reading would sprout up all over the world to sprout.
I was visiting a friend on the other side of the continent when I encountered the Little Free Library for the first time. I fell in love instantly. Years have passed. I've been thinking about it. As soon as I moved into my Brooklyn home in the fall of 2018, I put one in front of my house, painted it yellow, and left a few well-loved books inside.
That week, Todd Bol died.
Years ago, in our community of artists and low-income families with children, nowhere near a bookstore, I looked at the small library of Understored to enough, I took all my shows of genres, ERA, and feelings.
A day in the life of my little free library
One day during a challenging period of being, longing for something that would turn my best mind, I decided to use my method of composition, which believes that even in the most critical moments it is worth turning the page of experience because the thought of Life is always greater than that of the living.
Every day for thirty days, I took a random book from the small library, opened to a fake page, and worked on a novel about beauty, airport textbooks, Tolstoy, Ayn Rand, Harry Potterand the Bible was a blue thing at par with it.
As every creative person knows, and as Lewis Carroll eloquently explained in his work on difficulty in mathematics and life, when we rest where we pass where we pass when we pay attention to something else entirely; That's when ignorance shines through with an unexpected solution No deliberate effort could be deliberate effort.
After reading the page, I would take a long walk to let the words buy in my mind as I knelt down to look at the little things – stones, and the Great Master, and the Great Master, and the Great Master in Raising. The words that unconsciously arrange themselves in the divination of the day … divination? where? A poem?
When I returned home, I would put the found object under the microscope and take a picture – cellular and planetary at the same time, itself an invitation to exchange ideas – and start putting the text on top of the picture.
Here they are all – maybe unusual gifts for the book lover in your life, maybe inspired to try to create Book desert libraries in all five boroughs of New York City – communities more than a mile from a public library or books.
